The history of the short wawes and the radio amateur are tightly tied together. Wenn, near the end of the XIX century, electromagnetic waves have been produced, this phenomenon did attract scientists. It was shortly admitted that, the range of propagation diminished with the reduction of the wawelenght. It was admited that, under 200 m. short wawes were useless. This was the reason to allow radio amateurs to use them. With numerous tests, amateurs did make the constation that their transmissions reached unusual distances. In 1921, radio amateurs of the USA where heard in Europe. In 1923, on the 27th november, the first bi-lateral liaison (QSO) was made between a French and a American amateur on approximately 100 m. wawelenght. Since then, liaisons between stations more and more farther away did multiply. From 1925 onward, official agencies tested traffic on wawelength below 100 m. and commercial traffic was on.
The radio amateur can be user or experimentalist or both. In
the past, he had to build his apparatus, even their components,
very often. Today, he can buy excellent apparatus, ready for
transmission.
There is no week without the discovering, in specialised revues,
of new electronic applications. The curiosity of the Ham push him
to test these new technics building, solving an adaptation to his
needs and possibilities, while respecting the recommendations of
the IARU. In every country, clubs group radio amateurs, giving
them the opportunity to exchange experiences in small groups of
interest. New applications: antenna, transmitter, receiver,
informatic processing, numeral transmissions have been conceived
by radio amateurs operators. It necessary to insist on the
important role, without exageration, played by the radio amateurs
for the development of the radio on short wawes.
IARU : International Amateur Radio Union. Nowadays, the IARU
count 2'500'000 licenced amateurs around the world.
The RAV or Club Radioamateurs Vaudois is the section of Vaud of
the USKA (Swiss Amateur Radio Union). USKA is a member of the
IARU.
In each country, clubs gathered the radio hams, giving them
the opportunity to exchange their experiment by lobbys. Many
applications: antennas, transmitters, récépteurs,
programs
data-processing, digital transmission were conceived by radio
hams. One can thus insist, without exaggerating on the important
part played by the radio hams in the development of the short
waves.

The R.A.V. or Club Radioamateur Vaudois is a swiss section of USKA , Swiss Short Wave Amateurs, member of the IARU , International Amateur Radio Union.
